Good Samaritan Gwinnett’s Access Academy: Dignity in Care, Opportunity in Action

Good Samaritan Health Centers of Gwinnett has long been guided by the belief that every individual deserves more than access to healthcare – they deserve an experience marked by dignity, respect, and compassion. Building on this foundation, the organization has launched Access Academy, a private, certificate-granting, low-cost postsecondary education program targeting students of low-income and/or minority households who aspire to pursue careers in healthcare.

Located along the culturally vibrant corridors of Buford Highway and Jimmy Carter Boulevard in Gwinnett County, Good Samaritan Gwinnett serves one of Georgia’s most diverse communities. As part of a national network of community health centers that collectively care for 31 million people, the organization plays a vital role in addressing the needs of those who lack access to healthcare. With 100 million Americans relying on nurse practitioners and community health centers like Good Samaritan Gwinnett, the launch of Access Academy represents a critical investment in both people and community health.

Breaking Barriers to Meaningful Careers

Access Academy’s five-month program offers students an accessible and affordable way to earn their medical assistant certification, opening doors to a fulfilling healthcare career without the usual financial burden.

Greg Lang, Chief Financial Officer of Good Samaritan Gwinnett, spearheaded the efforts to secure state authorization and launch Access Academy. Lang emphasized the broader impact of the program.

“Access Academy isn’t just about training healthcare workers. It’s about ensuring that those who feel called to serve in healthcare have the opportunity to do so, while also helping uninsured patients experience care with dignity,” Lang said.

Thanks to the generosity of donors and the dedication of volunteer instructors, students can receive high-quality education and support at a cost that’s within reach. It reflects Good Samaritan Gwinnett’s commitment to reducing systemic barriers and fostering professional growth for those eager to serve their communities.

A Commitment to Healthcare Mentorship and Community

Since 2012, Good Samaritan Gwinnett has mentored nearly 450 healthcare graduate students, providing hands-on learning opportunities and contributing to the development of future healthcare professionals. Access Academy expands on this commitment.

“Our goal has always been to strengthen the community by providing care that honors the dignity of each individual,” Lang said. “Access Academy is an extension of that mission, offering students not just a career but the chance to transform people and communities.”

Good Samaritan Gwinnett, as a faith-based ministry, credits God’s provision and guidance for the creation of Access Academy. This initiative is a testament to the organization’s deeper calling to serve its neighbors.

A Ripple Effect of Change

The impact of Access Academy stretches beyond the classroom. By preparing individuals for careers in healthcare, the program enhances earning potential, strengthens household incomes, supports healthier communities, and creates hope for a brighter future.

“Access Academy is a direct investment in the lives of our neighbors and a reflection of our commitment to accessible healthcare,” said CEO Shameka Allen. “By helping students achieve their goals, we’re ensuring that more uninsured members of our community receive dignified, high-quality care – delivered by compassionate professionals who understand their needs.”

Faith and Purpose Drive the Mission Forward

Access Academy represents a significant step in Good Samaritan Gwinnett’s ongoing mission to serve underserved populations. The program reflects the organization’s belief that healthcare is not just a service but a ministry, grounded in faith and dedicated to meeting the needs of individuals where they are.
